I’ve just returned from a weekend in Savannah and I have some awesome adventures to share! This city has a LOT to offer its visitors. My experience with Southern charm began when I found big wooden rocking chairs in the airport! A fifteen minute taxi ride later I found myself entering the Hyatt Regency, right on the Riverwalk! I dropped off my bags and headed out for my first dinner experience in Savannah. I’ve heard a lot about the microbreweries and relaxing sounded good after a day of traveling so I picked Moon River Brewing Co. BBQ Pork Sandwich, garlic fries and a Harpoon Cider hit the spot! I found out later on in the weekend that Moon River is rumored to be haunted – glad I didn’t check out the staff ghost stories before I went! I would definitely recommend reserving a hotel room with a river view. At the end of a long day I could relax in my room and watch the boats sail past as the illuminated Riverwalk nightlife began.

Day 1: Savannah offers such a variety of activities I had a hard time deciding how to fill my first day. I started the morning at Perk’s Coffee Shop in the lobby of the hotel. I sipped a Starbucks cappuccino while looking over brochures from the concierge desk. With caffeine and a bagel for energy, I was ready to venture out. I decided to start with a Historical Tour of Savannah, led by Tours by BJ. It was a great introduction to the architecture, history and gardens Savannah is famous for. It was a driving tour, but we got to walk around at several spots – cobblestone streets, old mansions and beautiful churches. I wish I had time to go on the Fine Arts Gallery or Low Country Tour!

After the tour I was ready to try out one of the infamous local dining options! I’ve heard too much about Paula Dean’s restaurant; I couldn’t avoid it any longer! I made a reservation at The Lady and Sons because I heard it gets busy at night. While I was surprised to find a lot of healthier options, I opted for the true Paula Dean experience and had The Lady’s Southern Buffet and enjoyed an endless supply of southern fried chicken, mac and cheese, collard greens and peach cobbler for dessert. To walk off some of Paula’s buttery rich dishes I decided to stroll around historic downtown, since I was already there. The shops were an eclectic blend of everything from traditional antiques to Bohemian-style arts and apparel. I unfortunately wore heels to dinner, so after exploring the shops in the historic district I was quite ready to soak in the tub back at the Hyatt! A hot tub and soothing view of the river created a very sleepy traveler so I wasted no time jumping into my Hyatt Grand Bed.

Day 2:
I had one full day left in Savannah and lots to do! I started the morning with a tour of the Telfair Museum. Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built from 1818-1819 for Alexander Telfair. Opened in 1886, the Telfair Academy contains two nineteenth-century period rooms and houses nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and European art from the museum’s permanent collection including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and decorative arts. I could have spent the whole day in the museum!

For lunch I visited Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House – Paula Dean’s brother’s restaurant! I had grilled oysters, Savannah red rice and coleslaw. You won’t be disappointed eating here! I’m from a landlocked state so I wanted to take advantage of being by the ocean. I went on a dolphin tour for the afternoon! Located right next to the hotel, I joined Captain Derek and several other eager visitors for a two-hour narrated cruise along Savannah’s historic waterways out towards Tybee Island. Among the things we got to see were: dolphins, Savannah’s historic waterfront, the Waving Girl, Fort Jackson, Tybee Island and the Tybee Island Lighthouse. On top of that, who doesn’t love a few hours in the sun?!

In 2003, the American Institute of Paranormal Psychology named Savannah the most haunted city in America. I’m not much of a ghost person, but I couldn’t leave the city without checking out this whole “haunted” thing a little bit. So I ate at The Olde Pink House for dinner. This restaurant hosts the most frequently seen ghost in Savannah – General Habersham who resided there in 1771! I’m not going to tell you about my experience… you’ll have to see for yourself! Lets just say, my interest was certainly piqued and I had to investigate more. So I signed up for a Haunted Pub Crawl. I was surprised to find out Savannah is one of the few cities that allows “to go cups” for alcoholic beverages. As long as the cups are paper or plastic you’re free to walk around wherever you’d like. This 2-hour candlelight tour was led by costumed guides and full of strange stories and both types of “spirits”! Certainly couldn’t experience anything like this in my hometown. At least I’d hope not!

I had an incredible time exploring the diversity and richness of Savannah this weekend. And I only explored the tip of the iceberg! Next time I come back (and I do hope its soon) I’ll have to check out Tybee Island, the Golf Club at Savannah Harbor, the Dueling Pianos Saloon, Wine Tour, Deep Sea Fishing Charter and a Ghost Tour in A Hearse!
