Session Abstract

A successful TWI implementation depends on it becoming aligned with the objectives of the company, for example, alignment with Lean or ISO requirements.  Everyone needed to be on board from the plant manager to the machine operator to achieve the goal of improved quality and on time delivery. See how this was facilitated at Albany International Monofilament in Homer, New York through coaching by an experienced TWI implementation expert. Paul Smith tells the story of the power of coaching in a successful TWI implementation.

Presenter Biography

Paul H. Smith is the principal of JACM Associates Inc. JACM does strategic planning, TWI training and implementation, and leadership coaching.

 

Paul has over thirty years experience as a Human Resources Executive with competencies in Job Instruction, employee development, strategic planning, HR strategy, change management, labor relations, and compensation and benefit management.

 

He implemented Job Instruction at ESCO Turbine Technologies in response to the need to develop a standardized, reliable and repeatable method of training new and existing employees. Job Instruction reduced training time by 90% while reducing initial errors by 95% resulting in a 25% increase in capacity.

 

Under his direction his team created and implemented a process for workforce cross-training, Job Instruction auditing, on-boarding, and orientation. Paul has developed and implemented lean events for all levels of employees covering the topics of Standard Work, 5S, SMED, Visual Workplace, Total Productive Maintenance, and Value Stream Mapping.

 

He has made presentations at the  Association for Manufacturing Excellence, The Balanced Score Card Collaborative and SHRM.  His work has been cited in numerous publications including the book Strategy Maps published by the Harvard Business School.

 

Paul holds an MBA from Syracuse University, MLIR from Michigan State University and a BS from Le Moyne College. He is a Certified Senior Professional in Human Resources by the Society for Human Resource Management, and is a Certified Benefits Professional and Certified Compensation Professional by World at Work. As a certified

Job Instruction trainer he has taught job instruction to hourly employees, supervisors, and executives.
